Jacob Winner By Far

SWAS Athlete Jacob Mibus is a champion by far.

The young athletics superstar from Dunkeld has claimed his third consecutive State Cross Country Title and will compete to defend his National Title this Weekend.

After starting secondary college this year, Jacob admits that going into a new category he was slightly nervous before the School Sport Victoria Cross Country State Titles in Bundoora, and states that the course wasnt an easy feat. His dad Trevor Mibus stated in an interview that the time he ran (3km in 15.27) was far from his personal best, but fought hard to get his placing.

As Jacob prepares for the National Championship in Albany WA, he also prepares himself to act as a "guinea pig" for a new running blade. Unfortunately Jacob lost his foot in a farming accident in 2009, since then Jacob has defied many odds (was up and running only three months after being fitted with his first prosthesis) and competes as an AWD (athlete with a disability). Jacob will be one of the first in the country to trial this new blade (much like the blade used by Australian Kelly Cartwright). If a success, this new structure has the ability to make Jacob faster and much more agile during both Cross Country and Track Events.

SWAS puts its full support behind Jacob and his family and wish him all the best in Albany.

Go Jacob!

Netballers Learn From The Best

Sunday 1st June saw the latest combined Netball Training Session presented by Netball Victoria.

Three regional Academies (Westvic, Barwon and South West) are combining together to give their netball programs the best training sessions possible throughout season 2014. Girls ranging from the ages of 13-19 in a variety of playing abilities are brought together to learn new skills and playing techniques and to be challenged among their peers; all while being taught by some of the states finest coaches.

Two of the South West Academy of Sports development squad were able to attend the latest session held in Geelong over the weekend. At this session the girls were put through their paces, having an intense session focussing on playing both offensive and defensive netball.

Former Australian player and U19 Victorian State Coach Nicole Richardson led the session this time; a bonus for the girls who are trialling for State selection later on in the year. Having Nicole at sessions like these give the girls trialling more exposure and lets themselves become known to Richarson which will benefit them later on.

Feedback from the girls has been really positive, with one girl stating that ‘she learnt more in one session than she did in an entire season at club level;’ a definite positive element to focus on with developing players. With these sessions we strive to give these girls the best opportunity they can have to develop their skills and their game awareness to create more talented, well rounded players.
