SWAS Induction Day

On Sunday 10th February 2019 Athletes were inducted into SWAS. Athletes were introduced to the SWAS team and coaches, received their 2019 uniform and participated in planning, functional movement patterns, strength and conditioning and recovery sessions.

All athletes had Muscular skeletal screening with Zoe from Axis Physiotherapy. They were provided with pre game eating with EatFit Nutrition. Psychology & Getting the Most out of Your Mind was presented to parents and athletes by Dr. Jodie Fleming; The Psychology of It. Finally athletes had the honor of listening to guest speaker Carol Cooke, 3x Paralympic Gold Medalist, who shared her extremely inspirational story.

For the 2019 year 83 athletes were awarded scholarships with the South West Academy of Sport (SWAS). These athletes came from right across the South West Region with 19 athletes from Warrnambool, 13 from Corangamite, 14 from Moyne, 21 from Southern Grampians and 16 from Glenelg.

The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) is the peak sporting body of South West Victoria for aspiring elite athletes. SWAS provides athlete education and training opportunities for all its member athletes across the South West.

SWAS is the regional development pathway provider for the Victorian Institute of Sport and is funded by the State government and South West Local Governments to provide training and educational opportunities for aspiring South West athletes and coaches. SWAS works within all Olympic and Commonwealth sports programs and also works in any sport program that is linked with the Department of Sport and Recreation.

So if you are an aspiring athlete, SWAS we can help you along your pathway and provide you with the essential elite athlete education and training that you require to take the next big step in your sporting career.

SWAS provides a range of performance services for supported talented athletes including:

  • Intensive training by quality coaches
  • Fundamental Movement and Speed & power sessions
  • Mentoring & Leadership training
  • Strength and conditioning programs, support and advice (including functional movement screening)
  • Access to myAISbasecamp an Australian Institute of Sport athlete development and support program
  • Sports science testing and education
  • SWAS uniform
  • Personal Development workshops such as Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Media training and Recovery
  • Access to a medical support network.

In sports where SWAS does not have a partnered squad program, athletes may apply for the Individual Athlete Program. The Individual Athlete Program supports talented athletes from a variety of Olympic, Paralympic and non-Olympic (Commonwealth Games) sports.

The scholarship period for the Individual Athlete Program will run from 10 February 2019 to 31 December 2019. The timeline for the selection process is outlined below:

  • Closing date for applications Friday 18 January 2019
  • Athletes notified of the application outcome Wednesday 30 January
  • Athlete Induction day Sunday 10 February

Please note: Individual scholarships are only available to athletes in sports where SWAS does not host a squad program. In 2019 SWAS has partnered squad programs with the following sports: Clay Target Shooting, Cycling, Golf, Netball, Tennis, Surfing, Football* (Soccer) within SWAS and applications forms will be provided shortly, please contact the office, your club or keep an eye on the SWAS website for further information.

2019 SWAS Tennis Program Trials 

Tennis Victoria in conjunction with South West Academy of Sport will be holding SWAS Selection Trials on Sunday 2 December from 4:00 pm Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Centre. 

All interested athletes will need to register with Tennis Victoria at tennisvic.wufoo.com/forms/meaoa1d1qrmnot/

The SWAS Tennis program is open to all athletes within the South West in the 11-16 age groups.

The tennis program caters for approximately 16 athletes.

Athletes selected in the Tennis program must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Be an existing member of a Tennis Victoria affiliated club in the South West, or;
  2. Have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  3. Have reached a satisfactory standard of play based on current player rankings and/or performance at local & school tournaments and regional events.

The tennis program is structured to deliver training camps and local hitting sessions over the 12 month program period, the training camps are delivered each school term. Each camp combines on-court activities with sports science and personal development activities off the court. The camps are scheduled to avoid Tennis Victoria’s “Player Support Program” sessions (which is a further complement to an athlete’s daily and weekly training environment of private coaching) as well as avoid Regional Teams events.

The 2019 Tennis squad program will run from February 10th 2019 to December 16th 2019

South West Academy of Sport Awards Presentation Night

The South West Academy of Sport Awards Presentation Night recognises outstanding achievers of 2018 in the following categories:

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Netball Program

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Clay Target Program

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Cycling Program

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Tennis Program

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Surfing Program

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Golf Program

-Outstanding achiever SWAS Individual Athlete Program

We will also present six Strength and Conditioning Awards for each of our gym locations, the SWAS Community and Leadership Award, the SWAS Education Award and our two Perpetual Trophies for Sport Performance Excellence and Overall Excellence.

Date: Friday 16th November

Venue: Flying Horse Upstairs Function Room

Time: 6:30pm.

The Awards evening will include a sit down dinner, guest speaker and awards.

Guest Speaker: Australian Table Tennis player Melissa Tapper.
