Penny Smith has been awarded the Corangamite Sportsmen’s Clubs senior sports star of the year

The Corangamite Sportsmen’s Club Sports Star Awards were held recently where SWAS Clay Target Shooting Coach Penny Smith was voted senior sports star of the year.
The award recognized her achievements and a great year of results including a first place at the World Cup in New Delhi, India, winning the women’s trap event and a gold medal in the mixed team at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
SWAS Athlete Caylyn Sharp was also recognized at the event as the runner up of the junior sports star award for her outstanding year in Athletics.
Congratulations to Penny and Caytlyn on these great achievements.

Athletics Australia National All Schools Championships

Caytlyn Sharp represented Victoria and SWAS at the Athletics Australia National All Schools Championships last weekend and has come home with a t20 Australian under 16s record time in her 200m event. The previous record was 29:80 and Caytlyns time was 29:73.

Caytlyn takes on the All Schools Nationals

December 8th, 9th and 10th marks the Australian All Schools Championships where SWAS Individual Athlete Caytlyn Sharp will be competing in many events.

At this Championship Caytlyn will compete in the 100m, 200m, Shot Put, Discuss and Long Jump.

The Championship is being held in Adelaide at the South Australian Athletics Stadium.

We wish Caytlyn all the best with her events.

The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) 2017 Tennis program, proudly supported by Tennis Victoria and the Victorian Institute of Sport, provides coaching, training and education sessions designed to complement athlete’s daily and weekly training environment with their local private coach – through the provision of both on and off court activities. The program aims to bring together the most talented junior players in the South West region.

The 2018 SWAS Tennis Program Trials are being held on Sunday 3rd December 2017 at 4:00pm at the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club. 

 

Benefits to athletes selected in SWAS:

  • Intensive training by quality coaches
  • Skill development
  • Development camps (Each camp combines on-court activities with sport science and personal development activities off the court).
  • Strength and conditioning programs, support and advice (including functional movement screening)
  • Access to myAISbasecamp an Australian Institute of Sport athlete development and support program
  • Sports science testing and education
  • SWAS uniform
  • Personal Development workshops such as Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Media training, Recovery
  • Access to a medical support network.
  • Tennis Victoria tournament support at identified Junior Tour tournaments from the regional state coach & Tennis Victoria’s Association/Regional Challenge.
  • Melbourne Park Inter-Academy Challenge involving on-court coaching, competition and other activities with all other Victorian Regional Academies.

The 2018 Tennis squad program will run from February 2018 to January 2019. Please note that if you are successful our Induction Day is on Sunday, 18 February 2018 and is a mandatory commitment with musculoskeletal and physical testing, SWAS induction, myAISbasecamp information, uniform distribution and sports psychology for parents and athletes.

SWAS Individual Athlete Program is NOW open for application

The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) is the peak sporting body of South West Victoria for aspiring elite athletes. SWAS provides athlete education and training opportunities for all its member athletes across the South West.

SWAS is the regional development pathway provider for the Victorian Institute of Sport and is funded by the State government and South West Local Governments to provide training and educational opportunities for aspiring South West athletes and coaches. SWAS works within all Olympic and Commonwealth sports programs and also works in any sport program that is linked with the Department of Sport and Recreation.

So if you are an aspiring athlete, SWAS we can help you along your pathway and provide you with the essential elite athlete education and training that you require to take the next big step in your sporting career.

SWAS provides a range of performance services for supported talented athletes including:

  • Intensive training by quality coaches
  • Skill development
  • Development camps 
  • Mentoring
  • Strength and conditioning programs, support and advice (including functional movement screening)
  • Access to myAISbasecamp an Australian Institute of Sport athlete development and support program
  • Sports science testing and education
  • SWAS uniform
  • Personal Development workshops such as Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Media training and Recovery
  • Access to a medical support network.

In sports where SWAS does not have a partnered squad program, athletes may apply for the Individual Athlete Program. The Individual Athlete Program supports talented athletes from a variety of Olympic, Paralympic and non-Olympic (Commonwealth Games) sports.

The scholarship period for the Individual Athlete Program will run from February 2018 to January 2019. The timeline for the selection process is outlined below:

  • Closing date for applications 22 January 2018

Please note: Individual scholarships are only available to athletes in sports where SWAS does not host a squad program. In 2018 SWAS has partnered squad programs with the following sports: Clay Target Shooting, Cycling, Golf, Netball, Tennis, Surfing, Volleyball*, Rifle*(*partnership discussions underway) within SWAS and applications forms will be provided shortly, please contact the office, your club or keep an eye on the SWAS website for further information.

SWAS Tennis Athletes bring home great results from the International Pro Tour Tournament

Our SWAS Tennis athletes Patrick Drake, Eloise Swarbrick and Harry Boyd competed at The Quest Bendigo International Pro Tour on November 7th and walked away with amazing results.

Patrick Drake won the 16s Final 6-3 and 6-2 against the 9th seed Andy Caruana. These results follow from the excellent form at the previous Bendigo tournament back at the end of September and then followed up with a win in the 16u tournament at Altona at the start of October.

Eloise Swarbrick was the runner up in the 16 & under girls and took the win in the the AMT Woman’s Doubles.

Harry Boyd and Patrick Drake competed in the AMT Men’s Doubles and made it to the quarter finals.

Willow Sainsbury & Tom Gedye also competed at the International Pro Tour with great results in both singles and doubles.

Congratulations on these great results and keep up the hard work and training!
